The shower is the room people worry about most and the one where the worrying is least often justified. That is not reassurance for its own sake — it follows from what the surfaces are made of.
Mold needs something to eat. The dramatic growth people mean by "black mold" needs saturated cellulose: drywall paper, wood, ceiling tiles. A ceramic tile, a glass screen and a sealed grout line offer none of that. What grows there lives on soap scum, skin oils and dust, which supports surface mildew and common household molds — a cleaning problem, not a building problem.
So the honest answer for most shower questions is: it is probably mildew, it is probably fine, and the fix is ventilation. The exceptions are specific, and they are worth knowing precisely.
What Is Actually Growing in Your Shower
Three different organisms account for nearly everything people find, and all three respond to the same treatment.
Mildew — flat, powdery, gray to black, on grout lines and along the bottom of glass. Wipes off. The most common finding by a wide margin.
Cladosporium — olive-green to black, slightly velvety, favoring caulk lines and the cooler corners. A very common indoor mold and a frequent allergy trigger, but it sits on the surface here rather than rooting into anything.
Serratia marcescens — the pink or orange slime around drains, in soap dishes and along the tray corners. Not a fungus at all but a bacterium living on soap residue. Pink growth in bathrooms covers it specifically.
Because the response is the same for all three — clean the surface, cut the standing moisture — identifying which one you have is genuinely optional here. That is not true elsewhere in the house.
The Four Places That Do Matter
Everything above assumes non-porous surfaces. These four are not, and growth on them means something different:
1. The ceiling above the shower. Painted drywall, porous, and directly in the steam plume. This is the most common place bathroom growth becomes a real problem, and it is nearly always a fan that cannot clear the room. See mold on a ceiling.
2. Drywall above the tile surround. Tile usually stops partway up the wall. Above that line the material is absorbent, and growth there means steam is condensing faster than it clears.
3. The base of the tub or shower tray. Where the enclosure meets the floor and wall, water that gets past the seal has nowhere to drain and nothing pushing it out. Growth here can indicate water tracking under the tray or into the subfloor — the one bathroom finding that most often turns out worse than it looks.
4. Around the toilet base and under the vanity. Not steam at all but a slow supply or waste leak. Check for a soft or spongy floor, and look at the back corners of the vanity cabinet rather than the visible front.
The common thread: porous material that should be dry. Tile getting dirty is expected. Drywall getting wet is not.
Confirming It Is Just Surface Growth
Two checks, thirty seconds:
The wipe test. Gloves, ventilation, a damp cloth on a small area. If the growth lifts and the surface beneath is clean and unstained, it was sitting on top — mildew or surface mold, nothing structural.
The press test, on the porous bits only. Press the drywall above the tile, the ceiling near the patch, and the wall at the base of the tub. Firm is good. Any softness or give means water has been in the material, and that changes the answer.
If both come back clean, you have a cleaning and ventilation task and nothing more.
Grout and Caulk Behave Differently
Worth separating, because they fail for different reasons and people treat them the same.
Grout is cementitious and slightly porous, so growth can get a shallow footing in it — especially where the sealer has worn off. It cleans up, but it will keep coming back on an unsealed grout line in a room that stays humid. Re-sealing grout after cleaning is the step most people skip and the one that actually holds.
Caulk is the more revealing of the two. Silicone itself is not food, so when you see growth in a caulk line it is usually growing behind the caulk, in the gap where the seal has lost adhesion and water has wicked in and stayed. No cleaner reaches that, which is why caulk growth is the single most commonly re-cleaned surface in a house.
Recurring caulk growth is a failed seal, not a cleaning failure. The fix is to cut the old caulk out entirely, dry the joint properly — give it a day, not an hour — and re-caulk with a sanitary silicone. Doing that once beats scrubbing it monthly.
What to Clean With
- Tile and glass — anything works, including bleach. Non-porous, nothing gets below the surface.
- Grout — detergent and a stiff brush, or a dedicated mold cleaner. Then re-seal. Bleach removes the color without doing much about growth in the pores, which is why bleached grout darkens again in the same pattern.
- Caulk — clean it if it is sound, replace it if growth returns. Do not keep bleaching a joint that has failed.
- Painted drywall or the ceiling — treat as drywall, not as bathroom surface. Different rules, and bleach is the wrong tool.
Ventilate while cleaning, wear gloves, and do not mix bleach with any ammonia-based cleaner — that combination produces chloramine gas, and a small enclosed bathroom is the worst possible place for it.
Why It Comes Back, and the Fix That Works
Nearly always the same answer: the room is not drying between uses.
- Run the extract fan during the shower and for twenty minutes after. Most builder-grade fans are undersized. If the mirror is still fogged ten minutes after you leave, the fan is not clearing the room.
- Confirm the fan vents outside, not into the attic. This is a genuinely common construction shortcut and it moves the moisture into your roof structure.
- Squeegee the glass and walls after showering. Removing standing water shortens drying time more than anything else on this list.
- Leave the shower door and bathroom door open between uses.
- Re-seal grout annually in a heavily used shower.
- Keep humidity under 50% where you can.

When to Escalate
- Growth on the ceiling or the drywall above the tile, spreading rather than static
- The floor or wall at the base of the tub feels soft
- Growth returns within days of a thorough clean
- More than roughly 10 square feet affected
- Loose or hollow-sounding tiles, which can mean water behind the surround
- A musty smell that persists when the room is dry and clean — that suggests growth somewhere you cannot see
The Short Version
On tile, grout and glass, dark growth is a cleaning and ventilation job, and the species does not change what you do. On the ceiling, the drywall above the tile, or the base of the tub, the same patch is a question about whether water is reaching material that should be dry — and that one is worth answering properly.
